The joys and despairs involved with barn finds

Would you buy a car that was tucked away from prying eyes, left unloved for years, rotting and in desperate need of a full restoration?

Plenty of people do. They enter the wonderful world of barn finds with the sole intention of bringing a classic car back to life and good on ‘em we say at Citroen Classics.

This might put some people off but the sheer joy of discovering a classic Citroen hidden away from the outside world for decades should leave any car enthusiast drooling with delight.

Barn finds give you goose bumps. The sheer joy of finding a dusty DS or a hidden-away H-Van should make the heart flutter, if you don’t know about this concept where have you been hiding all of these years?

Barn finds in a nutshell

What exactly are barn finds?

Putting it simply this is a car which has been squirreled away for years hidden and protected from the outside environment. Some are in remarkable condition depending on the setting where they have been kept. Others are in a poor state and haven’t quite lasted as well.

Over the years there have been solitary cars found hidden away in outbuildings and entire collections of vehicles ready for minor and major restoration.

One thing you can guarantee. You’ll be one of the first people to see the car for years and that should be the exciting part!

Expect a bit of rot

One thing you have to understand about barn finds is they are going to need a bit of work. In fact, they don’t need a little bit of work, many require total restorations and some are just rotting shells.

The term ‘barn’ is loosely used for this type of discovery. Many classic cars are found hidden away in garages, industrial units and larger outbuildings. In many instances the location is unimportant - it’s what’s hidden away that counts.

Things to look for when you discover a gem are:

  • Proof of ownership
  • Exterior condition
  • Interior condition
  • Engine
  • Missing panels/parts
  • Ease of access
